ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Payments will be received without penalty until  Monday, February 2, 2026 or with a U.S. Postal Service Date Stamp of  February 2. 2026. Payments made after this date should include the appropriate penalty due; the amount can be found on your tax bill. Payments will be accepted through July 31, 2026.  After this date the tax payer should call the Greene County Treasurer’s office at 518-719-3530 for payment instructions.

A WORD ABOUT POSTMARKS: NYS Real Property Law states that we must respect the postmark on payments.  Therefore, when you pay your taxes near the end of a month PLEASE MAKE SURE the post office staff stamps the envelope in your presence which will guarantee the postmark.

New federal postmark rules (effective 12/24/25) formally confirm that mailbox deposits may not receive same-day postmarks, particularly for locations more than 50 miles from USPS regional hubs. The postmark date reflects when the mail is processed, not when it is dropped off, meaning that taxpayers using rural mailboxes could see 1-2 day delays before their payment is postmarked.
 Only hand-cancellation guarantees same-day postmarks. Taxpayers who need to ensure their payment bears a specific date must bring it to a USPS retail counter and request hand-cancellation. This has always been the only guaranteed method, but many taxpayers remain unaware of this requirement.

Did you know facts.

Did you know...

Tourism has been Cairo’s largest industry since the 1800’s. It was one of the first towns in the area to develop ski slopes and trails. Many of the regular visitors have made the conversion to seasonal or permanent residents.

The Cairo Railroad provided freight transportation to the industries in town starting in 1884. Early cargo consisted of locally mined bluestone, and hay and fruit from the local farms. In 1894 the Catskill Shale Brick Company became the railroads primary customer until the plant closed in 1914. The lack of steady freight and the increasing improvements to the local highways resulted in the termination of service at the end of the 1918 tourist season.
